Cheers to 5 Years

I remember exactly how I felt on this day 5 years ago - I spent most of the day freezing cold, shaking, and trying not to vomit. Sounds like a nasty case of the flu, right? I wasn’t sick though - just working up the nerve to publicly announce that I had started a business.

Someday I may go into everything that led up to that moment, but for now let’s just say that on December 6, 2013, I was incredibly unsure of my decision, and did not have much confidence that I would be successful with my new venture. I don’t know that I ever would have taken the leap if not for a little voice inside me that I could no longer ignore; a voice that said “If you don’t try now, you never will.” And so, I made the plunge (and the Facebook post), and announced my news.

Owning a business is very much like motherhood - and considering that I had a baby and started a business at almost the same time, it has been very interesting to compare my journeys with both. There’s a saying about having children, “the days are long but the years are short”. Oh goodness, does that ever apply here as well! Having a business is all-consuming, equal parts joyful and heartbreaking, and the years fly by. You blink and one day suddenly look at the calendar and realize that it’s been 5 years, and you wonder how you made it this far.

Well, I did make it. And just like having a child, I can’t imagine a time when Kelly Kester Photography wasn’t in my life.

Had this date not completely snuck up on me, I might have planned a big anniversary party - but maybe we’ll save that for 10 years (or for this spring when my husband’s new venture Irondequoit Beer Company opens up...). Instead, I hope you’ll indulge me as I take the next week to talk about some of my big moments that have happened since opening Kelly Kester Photography - five highlights for five years. I hope you’ll enjoy looking back with me...and I hope you all know how incredibly grateful I am for your support over the last 5 years. Here’s to the next 5, 10, 15...
